In my traditions, animals are two-headed spirits..meanings they operate in the spiritual and the physical. This is why birds are not just birds. They also carry out divine messages . Wild animals rely on their instincts, so it easy for them to be in both worlds and carry our prayers. 
(We do not offer live animals! But we do offer raw meat and food that is edible by the wild. ) these offerings have had amazing results, and reviews over the years.
